Why was Utopia canceled by Prime Video?
As much as many of us would have loved to see it, Utopia Season 2 is not happening. Why did Prime Video choose to cancel the series?
There are a few TV shows that get canceled early, leaving us with a lot of questions. Utopia was certainly one of them. Based on the British series of the same name, it arrived on Prime Video at the end of September 2020.
It didn’t take too long for Prime Video to decide that it wasn’t going to be renewed for a second season. What was the reasoning behind the cancellation?
Low views likely contributed to Utopia being canceled
Prime Video never stated exactly why the series was being canceled. In most cases, it’s simply due to not enough people tuning in for the series. Prime Video, like other streaming networks and broadcast networks, needs to weigh up the risk of people not tuning in for a new season. There are always drops into the next season, but would it be so bad that it wouldn’t justify the cost?
And Utopia wasn’t a cheap series to produce. There were a lot of visual effects needed, and the cost had to be factored in.
Why didn’t the show get the views? It was likely bad timing. This was a series that involved a deadly flu, a vaccine that had ulterior motives, and a lot of questions about people with money doing shady things.
The series was released during the pandemic year. Did we really need it at that time? Of course, Prime Video wouldn’t have wanted to hold it off too long and have it just sitting around, but the timing could have been better.
The bad timing also likely linked to the so-so reviews. It might have performed better had people not already had enough of the pandemic by this point.
