5 must-watch movies on Amazon for September 15, 2021
Desperado
Desperado was released in 1995 and stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in a neo-Western film directed by Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk til Dawn). This film is said to be Hayek’s break-out role.
This film is a wild ride that follows Mariachi (Banderas) and the gorgeous book store owner (Hayek) as they track down a Mexican drug lord, Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida). Mariachi’s past catches up with him as he gets wrapped up in the underworld of Bucho and his gang’s dealings. This leads to gunfights and blood in the streets of the border town Bucho runs.
The film also stars Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin, Quentin Tarantino, Carlos Gomez, Tito Larriva and Danny Trejo.
The Burning Plain
The drama film The Burning Plain is Guillermo Arriaga’s (Babel) directorial debut. The film is a two-tiered storyline about a mother and daughter bonding after the daughter’s difficult upbringing.
Arriaga is known for his out of sequence storylines and The Burning Plain follows this template.
The film follows three main characters in storylines approximately 20 years apart. In the present day, Sylvia (Charlize Theron), a confident restaurant owner who lives in Oregon, is inwardly miserable and uses sex to escape the reality of her feelings. In the past, Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence) and her mother Gina (Kim Basinger) live in New Mexico. Gina is deeply in love with a man who isn’t her husband, and Mariana meets a boy who ends up being the son of her mother’s lover. All of this dysfunction will eventually meet, creating an interesting dynamic.
Also starring Joaquim de Almeida, John Corbett, Robin Tunney, Brett Cullen, Danny Pino, JD Pardo and Rachel Ticotin.
Director Arriaga described the premise in this way “There are very intense love stories here that take place in different places and times, with characters trying to find the healing powers of love, forgiveness and redemption.”
Last Flag Flying
Last Flag Flying is a drama starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne. The three men are Vietnam veterans who reunite when one of their sons is killed in the Iraq War.
Doc Shepherd (Carell), Sal Nealon (Cranston), and Richard Mueller (Fishburne) have all served their country and lived to tell about it. Thirty years later, they meet again to bury one of their sons killed in another war. In lew of a burial at Arlington National Cemetary, the father insists on a civilian burial so his son can be buried next to his mother. This will take the three men on a journey to New Hamshire as well as a journey back to their war days and what they have been through since that time.
Armageddon
The Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer film Armageddon from 1998 is just a great movie. It was the highest-grossing film worldwide of that year.
A meteor is headed for Earth, and it will hit and destroy everything in 18 days unless someone comes up with a brilliant plan quickly. It is decided they need to drill on the meteor and detonate a nuclear bomb. So, who better to do this than a group of oil drillers. Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his crew are the best deep-sea oil drillers in the world. They are put through training and will fly with a crew from NASA to save the world.
The film has an all-star cast. Joining Willis are Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson, Will Patton, Peter Stormare, William Fichtner, Michael Clarke Duncan, Keith David, and Steve Buscemi.
Despite its serious nature, the film has many comedic aspects and is overall a highly entertaining film.
Romeo + Juliet
This adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo +Juliet is a modernized version of the tale. Set in Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are rival business moguls.
Complete with gunfights, drug use and law enforcement who use terms such as “shall pay the forfeit of the peace.” It is an exciting take on the story that has been told before.
Leonardo DeCaprio plays Romeo to Claire Danes’ Juliet, and the two have great chemistry in their roles. Throw in Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino and Diane Venora, and you have the makings of a modern Shakespearean tragedy.
