The first episode of Modern Love Season 2 starred Minnie Driver as a doctor with a vintage sports car that kept breaking down. It was at the point where she had to consider selling the car, but it took her some time to get to a place where she could do it.
She’d had a few buyers interested before, but hadn’t been able to part ways with it. Her daughter at university wasn’t that impressed with the idea of the car being sold. It was her first husband’s car.
At one point in the episode, we see her driving around speaking to nobody. It doesn’t take long for us to find out who she is talking to in the car.
The car is her connection to lost love in Modern Love Season 2, Episode 1
Driver’s Stephanie is talking to her lost love. Played by Strike‘s Tom Burke, he sits in the car and just listens. However, he’s not really there. He’s in her imagination, with the car being the only place she feels a connection to him and that she can talk to him.
We find out about their lives together. They had some ups and downs, but they were in love with each other deeply. Sadly, Michael became seriously ill and passed away young. That’s why Stephanie is still so close to him.
She sells the car, but it’s clear that she didn’t really want to do it. Her second husband gets to understand it. He isn’t jealous that she is still in love with her first husband because he knows there’s a place in her heart for him anyway.
It’s her husband who heads to the buyer to get the car back. He can’t take that away from Stephanie.
We end with Stephanie and her daughter Shannon driving around the countryside in the car. It’s time for the two to bond.
