The dark musical Annette, an Amazon film, debuted at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in July. This film has received positive critical reviews, and director Leos Carax won the best director at the film festival.

This film stars Academy Award nominee Adam Driver and Academy Award Winner for Best Actress in a Leading Role Marion Cotillard as the leads for this story. This is director Leos Carax’s first English language film, with the screenplay by Carax along with Ron Mael and Russel Mael of the band Sparks.

This film is a musical that features songs by the pop/rock band Sparks, lending a cool dynamic as they co-wrote the film. A sample of the music can been seen in the video for “So May We Start.” The Mael brothers also play themselves in the film.

Annette trailer

The trailer gives us a great look into the tone of this love story of two people that are very much in the public eye. We are shown the personalities of Henry and Ann in the short conversation about how their performances went for that evening. Henry states he ‘killed’ the audience where Ann felt she ‘saved’ them.

We see the birth of their child, Annette, but her unique gifts are kept hidden in the trailer.

It seems their lives are a whirlwind of activity, and this film will have humor, romance, drama, and, of course, singing.
