5 good movies on Amazon for July 14, 2021
Brittany Runs a Marathon
The 2019 film Brittany Runs a Marathon is a film inspired by true events experienced by writer and director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s friend Brittany O’Neill. O’Neill’s story varies from the on-screen Brittany, but the message of inspiration is the same.
Jillian Bell plays Brittany, a girl living in New York City who enjoys partying with her roommate Gretchen (Alice Lee). When she goes to the doctor to score some Adderall, she is given the news that she is overweight and needs to make drastic changes to her lifestyle for her health.
She sets a weight loss goal, joins a running group, and decides to run the NYC Marathon with her new running friends. The story follows her journey to a healthier lifestyle and the ups and downs associated with the change.
Additional cast members include Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, and Micah Stock. Bell really shines in this film that is hilarious and truthful.
It is an endearing story that will inspire you to take action in your own life.
Annie
The musical comedy Annie from 2014 is a modern adaptation of the 1977 Broadway musical, which is based on the original comic strip Little Orphan Annie. The story follows Annie, a child in foster care who is chosen to live with a wealthy man to improve his image.
Since this is a musical, you expect to hear many of the original songs that are familiar with a modern twist. There are also new songs to keep the story fresh. This version has a smoother transition into the musical numbers, which also gives it a new feel.
Quvenzhané Wallis plays the titular character alongside Jamie Foxx’s William “Will” Stacks, the modern Daddy Warbucks. Joining them are Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale. Cameron Diaz, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and David Zayas. With cameos by Patricia Clarkson, Michael J. Fox, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Rihanna and Sia.
Although the premise will be familiar, the modern storyline will delight fans with a new telling of a nostalgic story.
First Wives Club
Hugh Wilson directed the 1996 film The First Wives Club, a comedy about a group of rich divorcees whose ex-husbands left them for younger women. The film is based on a novel by Olivia Goldsmith that has also been adapted into a musical.
Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton play Brenda, Elise and Annie, respectively. The girls originally met in college and had a fourth member of their group Cynthia (Stockard Channing). Although the foursome had been out of touch for years, the bond created in their college days was strong. When Cynthia, whose husband also left her for a younger model, commits suicide, the remaining three reunite and decide to take their lives back into their own hands. Thus forming The First Wives Club.
As if the main characters weren’t all-star enough, the cast also includes the great talents of Maggie Smith, Dan Hedaya, Bronson Pinchot, Marcia Gay Harden, Sarah Jessica Parker, Stephen Collins, Victor Garber, Elizabeth Berkley, Timothy Olyphant, Heather Locklear, J.K. Simmons, and Rob Reiner. Ivana Trump and Kathie Lee Gifford make cameos as themselves.
It is a hilarious look at a group of rich women who want to get revenge on their worthless exes for their infidelities.
Space Jam
The release of Space Jam: A New Legacy makes one nostalgic for the original film from 1996. Space Jam was an innovative film combining traditional cartoon animation, live-action and three-dimensional computer graphics.
It is a fun movie featuring many Looney Toons characters and NBA players. An evil alien theme park, Moron Mountain, is in need of new attractions. Swackhammer (Danny DeVito) sends his minions, Nerdlucks, to earth to capture Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters. The Nerdlucks challenge the Looney Tunes in a basketball game where they will willingly go to Moron Mountain to become enslaved performers if they lose. The aliens steal the talents of some NBA players, and Bugs Bunny enlists the help of Michael Jordan.
Bill Murray, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues all play themselves. And many NBA players appear in cameos.
It is a fun for the whole family flick.
Adventureland
Onto the last of the movies on Amazon for the day. Set in 1987, Adventureland is a comedy-drama coming of age film that is humorous and nostalgic. Also, the soundtrack is an amazing compilation of mostly 80s hits.
Jesse Eisenberg plays James, a recent college grad, planned a European trip for his summer. Unfortunately, his parents come into some financial troubles, requiring him to get a part-time job instead. Due to his lack of work experience, he has trouble finding a job until he applies at the local theme park, Adventureland. After his dreams of traveling, Europe had been squashed; he readies himself for the worse summer, that is until he meets Em (Kristen Stewart).
Another film with an all-star cast, Adventureland, also stars Martin Starr, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Margarita Levieva, Ryan Reynolds, Wendie Malick, and Michael Zegen.
Overall this film is a good one to watch and rewatch for the nostalgia it brings and the spunky telling of youthful summer shenanigans.
