Riding in Cars with Boys
Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) was the last film directed by Penny Marshall. The film is based on an autobiography by Beverly Donofrio, where she chronicles her story of being a teen mom who overcame difficult events of her life and went on to get her master’s degree.
Drew Barrymore plays Bev Donofrio, a young girl who longs to be a writer but an unexpected pregnancy at 15 puts that dream on hold. Her best friend Fay (Brittany Murphy) also finds out she is pregnant, and the girls marry their babies’ fathers. The story is set from 1961, when Bev is 11, until 1985.
Film critic Roger Ebert summed up the film with this comment, “A film like this is refreshing and startling in the way it cuts loose from formula and shows us confused lives we recognize ” Many people can see themselves in this film and the true look at how you let events in your life affect you.
Also starring Steve Zahn, Adam Garcia, Lorraine Bracco, James Woods, Rosie Perez, Desmond Harrington, Sara Gilbert and Peter Facinelli. Zahn has been praised for his role in this film and the major changes his character, Ray, experiences.
Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist
The romantic comedy Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a wild ride of a film. The story takes place over the course of one night while a group of teens look for the secret gig of their favorite band and search for a drunk friend who comes up missing. The film is based on a novel of the same name by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan.
Nick (Michael Cera) and Norah (Kat Dennings) meet when she asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend for five minutes. That leads to a night of hilarity and unexpected turns as Nick, Norah and their friends search for their favorite band, Where’s Fluffy? all over the city. Norah’s best friend Caroline (Ari Graynor) wanders off on her own while being very drunk, requiring the group to also search for her.
The film also stars Alexis Dziena, Aaron Yoo, Rafi Gavron, Jonathan B. Wright, and Jay Baruchel. There are great cameos by the authors, Cohn and Levithan, Seth Myers, Andy Samberg, Eddie Kaye Thomas, John Cho, Kevin Corrigan, and singer Devendra Banhart, whose song “Lover” is featured in the film.
Some critics have stated this film is boring, while others have praised the chemistry between Cera and Dennings, which makes this a sweet love story. The soundtrack has been highly praised as well. I think it is a hilarious film with a great cast and story that keep you interested in finding out how this night will end.
Honest Thief
The film Honest Thief is a great action thriller film that once again finds Liam Neeson with a particular set of skills.
Neeson plays former US Marine Tom Dolan, who was known as the “In-and-Out-Bandit” for his ability to steal large sums of money for the thrill of it. When he meets Annie (Kate Walsh), he changes his ways. When he tries to turn himself in to rid himself of his criminal past, two FBI agents double-cross him, steal his money and murder a fellow agent. This causes events to spiral, putting Annie and Tom in serious danger.
The film also stars Anthony Ramos, Jeffrey Donavan, Robert Patrick, and Jai Courtney. Critics have stated that the film’s story isn’t necessarily unique, but Neeson doesn’t phone in his role, making for a great film full of action.
