5 good movies on Amazon for June 23, 2021

50/50

A new release for Amazon in June is the black comedy 50/50.  The film that was original released in 2011 received praise for Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance and the screenplay that Will Reiser wrote.

Gordon-Levitt plays Adam Lerner, a radio journalist diagnosed with schwannoma neurofibrosarcoma, a cancerous tumor in his spine. The survival rate for this type of cancer is 50/50. His best friend Kyle (Seth Rogan) and his mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) take the news of his diagnosis very hard. His girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) promises to go along this journey with him. Still, as she was never fully committed to the relationship before the diagnosis, she isn’t the best support for him.

The film also stars Philip Baker Hall as a fellow cancer patient and Anna Kendrick as Adam’s therapist.

Adam is loosely based on Reiser’s own experience with his cancer diagnosis. Rogan’s character is based on the real-life role he played in Reiser’s life. It is a warm-hearted look at a difficult situation.

An American Werewolf in London

An American Werewolf in London is a horror-comedy from the ’80s that is just good fun.

Two friends, David and Jack, are backpacking across England are attacked by a werewolf, and it’s a waiting game to see if David will turn during the next full moon. I don’t want to give too much away, but this film is equal parts humor and horror and worth watching.

This film has been praised for its special effects that were top tier at the time of the release. In addition, the film won the first Academy Award for Best Makeup.

It has become a cult classic in the horror genre.

Catch and Release

This romantic comedy is a wild ride in love and friendship. Catch and Release didn’t receive a lot of praise from critics, but I highly recommend this movie as a fan of romantic comedies.

Catch and Release stars Jennifer Garner, Timothy Olyphant, Kevin Smith, Sam Jaeger, Fiona Shaw, and Juliette Lewis. The storyline takes you through ups and downs as you experience Gray’s (Garner) heartache in losing her fiance, Grady, and then discovering that he had a huge secret he never shared with her.

She bonds with Grady’s best friends and sets out to start a new life. When his secret is revealed, Gray has to decide how to move on with this new knowledge. There is something about this movie that strikes a chord, making the viewer question how they would react if something similar happened to them.

Be sure to check out the soundtrack as well. It rocks!

Little Women

Although you have seen the other version and probably read the book, the Greta Gerwig written and directed Little Woman will make you feel like it is the first time again.

Gerwig used Louisa May Alcott’s story and used her other writings to garner inspiration. The result is a beautiful new twist on a familiar story.

The film’s cast is outstanding, consisting of Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, and Chris Cooper.

Even if you think you have already seen enough versions of this novel adapted into a film, be sure to check this one out; you won’t be disappointed.

The Prince and Me

The modern twist on a fairy tale romance, The Prince and Me, will delight you with its love story of two characters from vastly different backgrounds.

Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles) is a hardworking pre-med student who has lofty goals and the intelligence to achieve them. Denmark’s Crown Prince Edvard is a pampered and spoiled royal playboy. When the two first meet, it is most definitely NOT love at first sight.

This tale is a great escape from the real world as you witness a ‘common’ American girl and a Danish Royal interact while trying to come to terms with their differences.
