Did Cora eventually find freedom on The Underground Railroad?
Cora runs away from the Randall plantation on The Underground Railroad series premiere, but she doesn’t remain free. Does she find freedom in the end?
Cora goes on a dangerous, harrowing, and sometimes heartbreaking journey on The Underground Railroad. It starts with her and Caesar escaping the Randall plantation, but it isn’t long before Cora is captured and in Ridgeway’s hands. He will stop at nothing to return her to the Randall family and collect his reward.
At the same time, Cora will stop at nothing to get free. Sure, at one point, she tries to kill herself due to everything that happens, but she does decide that she wants to live. Does she ever get free from Ridgeway again?
The start of the premiere saw Cora falling down a tunnel with someone below her. We get to that moment in Episode 9, with Ridgeway the one who is falling beneath her. Ridgeway cushions Cora’s fall, allowing her to survive and eventually shoot him. With Ridgeway gone, she finally has a chance to break for freedom.
Is Cora free at the end of The Underground Railroad?
The series and the book end in a similar way. Both of them have a sense of hope, but they also don’t give us the definitive answer we potentially need to finish this tale.
Cora does get a taste of freedom at the end of The Underground Railroad. She manages to find a wagon that is drive by a Black man who is heading west. He offers her a ride, but she’s not too certain about him at first. That’s not surprising considering how some of the Black people have reacted in the past.
Freedmen and women have turned against their own people out of fear of their own safety. Cora is understandably hesitant about trusting another. However, in the end, she does, getting in the wagon.
We’re left to hope that she gets to California and is able to find freedom.
