January is packed with new DVD and Blu-ray releases. Jan. 19 sees a total of 12 new DVD and Blu-rays coming to shelves.

It’s worth looking at some of the notable additions. After all, it’s overwhelming trying to pick the best options out of all 12.

There is something for everyone, but if you’re only going to get one, Miss Juneteenth is the big release. Nicole Beharie, Kendrick Sampson, and Alexis Chikaeze star in this movie about a former beauty pageant winner who is struggling with a daughter in the middle of teenage rebellion.

As a way to get her daughter under control, the single mom decides to enter her unsuspecting daughter into a beauty pageant. Not only will her daughter learn discipline but also some self-respect, but will it drive a wedge between the two?

Other notable DVD and Blu-ray releases this week

For those looking for a horror movie, The Village in the Woods is worth checking out. Phill Martin and Richard Hope star in this movie where everything may not be quite as it seems. Rebecca Park and Jason Vernon decide to restore a hostel in a small village, and they rely on the resident caretakers to help them.

While the two couples seem to get along just fine, it’s soon clear the caretakers may not be what they seem to be. There’s something sinister going on.

Scott Adkins, John Hannah, and Lashana Lynch star in the next release on the list. Look out for Max Cloud, a movie that sees a gamer end up in the video game that she’s playing. Now she needs to rely on her non-gamer friend in the outside world to get her to the end without dying.

Can she make it back to the real world? What happens if she does die while in the game?

If you’re more in the mood for a dramedy, you’ll want to get The Kid Detective. Adam Brody and Sophie Nelisse star in this movie about a man who is tasked with solving a real crime. It should be easy for the guy who solved simple crimes when he was growing up.

While trying to figure out who murdered a woman’s boyfriend, he has to face his own demons. Will he be able to rely on his detective skills, or is he still just a kid detective?
