The Pack is canceled after just one season at Amazon Prime Video

It’s one and done for the show that is like The Amazing Race with dogs. The Pack has been canceled by Amazon amid concerns about dog safety.

The reality show saw dogs and their humans team up to do what looked like exciting challenges and fun events. However, it turns out there was more going on behind the scenes, especially when some footage leaked.

According to TheWrap, animal rights group PETA saw leaked footage of dogs in distress. One was reportedly kicking away in water just hoping to find solid ground before being pushed into a rock face. It was distressing for the dog, and animal advocates were upset that something like this was allowed to happen.

PETA claims that there was more focus on entertainment than actively looking at whether the dogs were cared for. Many of the dogs looked distressed, which is noted through excessive licking, yawning, and similar traits. To the untrained eye, the things dogs do when distressed look like normal, everyday activities.

Producers say experts were on-site for The Pack

According to Amazon, dogs weren’t in distress. Whenever something was dangerous or whenever a dog did look like it wasn’t coping, animal safety experts stepped in. They made it clear what the dogs would need while filming, and the producers followed all suggestions.

There were also comments made during the episodes to put the focus on dog safety. The Pack host, Lindsey Vonn, would routinely make statements about safety protocols and any orientation the dogs and humans have been put through.

The problem for many is that these dogs aren’t trained for this. This isn’t the usual endurance courses or show courses that animals will take place in. Some of the dogs were senior dogs, which PETA believes should be snuggled up on a couch watching TV and not being on the TV.

It’s not clear whether the cancellation is purely due to the safety concerns. It’s possible that the series just didn’t get enough viewers, either. Amazon hasn’t had the most success with reality programming. Maybe it should look at relationship shows to entice fans of The Bachelor and Love Is Blind.
