We get Martha’s story on The Wilds Season 1, Episode 9

The Wilds Season 1, Episode 9 sees the girls face Day 22 on the island. They all start to break as they realize help isn’t coming. At the same time, we learn Martha’s story.

This is a major episode that continues the idea that one or more of the girls may not have made it off the island alive. Martha doesn’t tell her own story. Instead, her items have been packed into a box and the story comes from Nora’s journal. What has happened to Martha?

Two days with no food

On the island, we learn it’s been six days since the plane showed up. Thanks to the girls binging on their rations, they have gone two days without any food. They’re facing the possibility of not surviving.

Leah fears the worse, but she’s sure there is someone watching them. She’s sure there’s a way off the island, after all, Jeanette’s body left the island. The girls are still sure Jeanette’s body was washed out by the tide, so Leah decides to go out to the water and swim to freedom.

Meanwhile, Rachel is afraid of the water. It’s what made her so sick. She won’t even dive into the water when Nora tells her to. It’s only when Leah is in danger of drowning that Rachel dives in and swims out to save her.

While all that happens, Martha, Toni, and Shelby head out in search for food. Martha refuses to eat animals, but Shelby and Toni make it clear they need to eat to survive. This isn’t about killing for the sake of it but killing to keep people alive.

However, Martha tries to protect the goat that she keeps seeing on the island. Martha and Toni head off without her, finding lychees on the island on the way. They spend the night together in the forest, high on finding food.

Martha makes a big decision. She chooses to kill the goat for the survival of others.

We don’t get many answers, but we do find out that Martha was injured as a kid after falling off a trampoline. She got physical therapy, but it turned out her doctor molested her. Other girls spoke up, but Martha refused to admit this happened. She even went on the stand to say that he didn’t do anything to her, but it’s clear that he did.

She just tries to see the good in people all the time.

At the end of the episode, Dean tells Gretchen that he can’t find anything to use against Martha’s family. Gretchen needs something to blackmail the family so they don’t sue for whatever has happened to Martha.
