Emergence has been canceled and Amazon needs to save it

We’re at that point in the TV year where some of our favorite shows are canceled. Emergence is one of those shows, a freshman show with plenty of potential had it been given the chance. And that’s why Amazon needs to step in to save the show.

I won’t say that ABC didn’t support the mystery drama in the beginning. After all, it was one of the few ABC shows at NYCC 2019, and the press room was excellent to be a part of. However, as the show continued, it started to lose the support with the dwindling numbers.

The problem was the timeslot. Tuesday nights haven’t been great for ABC for a while, especially that 10 p.m. timeslot. The Rookie struggled in its first season and only picked up ratings because of its move to Sundays. Emergence seemed doom for failure when you look at it that way.

Amazon needs to give Emergence a chance

I don’t usually agree that streaming sites have to save absolutely everything that has been canceled. Sometimes, a show does need to come to its natural end. But this isn’t one of those cases. This is a show that deserved far more than one season to tell a story.

The casting was excellent. Sometimes I cringe at younger actors, but this is a show that got it perfect with Alexa Swinton and Ashley Aufderheide. Both are exception young ladies in the press rooms and they are brilliant actors on the screen. There is a bright future for both of them in TV and movies. They were also supported with excellent actors, including Allison Tolman and Donald Faison. In fact, it was excellent to see Faison step into a drama role.

With good writing and excellent cinematography, there was a lot of hope about where this show could go. There were plenty of ways that it could adapt thanks to the decision to use AI as a main plot point.

But it wasn’t just about the AI storyline. At the heart of this show was one about family. There was a story about two separated parents trying to do the best for their daughter and a father who just wanted something good for his daughter and granddaughter. Family isn’t all about the people who share our blood, which Jo immediately proved when she felt the need to protect Piper and brought her into the family.

When you mix family and technology, you always get some sort of intriguing storyline. The possibilities are endless.

Out of all the streaming services, Emergence would likely stand the best chance at Amazon Prime Video. It would compliment The Expanse well in terms of sci-fi elements. It would also match Tales from the Loop and Upload very well.

It’s not clear if the show is being shopped around at this point. I’d say it needs to be, and Amazon should say yes.
