3. One of Us Is Lying

YA books created by: Karen M. McManus

Already optioned/created: There is currently an option on the books. Universal Cable Productions and 5 Minute Media are set to create a TV show. As we’ve seen with other YA books, this doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Why it needs to be adapted: This is one of the newest book series on the list, but it enters so high for a good reason. The YA books offer mystery and crime drama at a teenage level. It’s a little like Elite on Netflix or Pretty Little Liars.

It doesn’t take long for the mystery to start. Five teenagers go into detention but only four come out. While Mr. Avery, who was supposed to be watching the kids, is out of the room, one drinks from a plastic cup and suffers a fatal allergic reaction. One of the other kids in the room killed him, and we have to figure out who it could be.

The series would work well for those who need another mystery series. It offers the chance for everyone to become detectives, as they watch the storylines play out. And this book series would allow a show to offer individual episodes per character, a little like The Haunting of Hill House focuses on the individual siblings in each episode.

There is a fear that the question of who did it could drag on. However, Elite has shown how to do this type of storyline. Plus, there is a sequel to help continue the story.
