6. Carry On

YA books created by: Rainbow Rowell

Already optioned/created: The novel hasn’t been optioned just yet. Everyone is sleeping on this!

Why it needs to be adapted: Carry On is actually the spin-off book for Rowell’s first novel FangirlFangirl is something that would certainly be fun to adapt, but viewers wouldn’t need it to understand the beauty of Carry On.

The spin-off focuses on Simon Snow, a fictional character from the Fangirl series. It’s a fun take on the harry Potter story, where an orphaned teen attends a school of witches and wizards. Instead of watching it from the beginning of Simon’s life, we pick up with the story when he’s 18 and going into his final year.

This story turns the tables on “The Chosen One” storyline. Not only does Simon need to fight off the big bad, but he needs to figure out just how to use his wand! And on top of that there’s a love story. A queer love story. This is one of the most progressive and inclusive YA books you’ll find, and it’s needed right now.

Oh, and there is a side story that interrupts the main plot now and then. That could be a fun story to include in small bites at the start and end of each episode. Just throwing that idea out there.
