2. The House of Night

YA books created by: P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast

Already optioned/created: Lionsgate did option the book series for five movies. That contract comes to an end this year, and so far, there has been no go-ahead with the project. Once the contract comes to an end, Amazon needs to quickly snap it up.

Why it needs to be adapted: The contract was initially taken at a time when vampire stories were all the rage. In fact, the reason I started reading the House of Night series was because the first book was free when I pre-ordered a Twilight novella. I was instantly hooked and decided to continue the series.

It focuses on a 16-year-old girl who is “marked” by a vampyre. She has to attend the House of Night, a school for vampires. There, she learns how to use her gifts and control her bloodlust. She not only learns more about her abilities but about herself. She finds a group of friends who will always have her back, which is great when she learns that there’s a conspiracy happening within the school.

One of the benefits of the book series is that it’s written by a mother and daughter team. The younger characters speak at the level they would, while the adults have their own personalities and stand out for various reasons.

A TV series would definitely be better than a movie to allow all the characters to develop the way they need to. It could work like The Magicians to pull the stories together and select specific moments for a season.
