4. Autumn in New York (2000)

  • Directed by: Joan Chen
  • Starring: Winona Ryder, Richard Gere, Elaine Stritch, Anthony LaPaglia, Sherry Stringfield, and Vera Farmiga

While Autumn in New York isn’t necessarily a Thanksgiving film by design, it is set in a warm autumn palette and setting. It might not feature a turkey but it certainly evokes the feeling of Thanksgiving season.

The movie stars Richard Gere as a playboy with outdated ideas of love and sex. Ryder’s character is a younger spitfire character that changes everything he thought he knew about the world as the two embark on a whirlwind romance.

3. Pieces of April (2003)

  • Directed by: Peter Hedges
  • Starring: Katie Holmes, Sean Hayes, Patricia Clarkson, Alison Pill, Oliver Platt, and Derek Luke

Pieces of April is one of the few films out there that genuinely takes place on Thanksgiving and revolves around the holiday. Katie Holmes stars as April Burns, a young woman who broke out of her dysfunctional family to live on her own in Manhattan.

Even though her apartment is tiny and she has a bad relationship with her family, she decides to invite them over for Thanksgiving dinner. Sadly, it might be the last year her mother, Joy, can make it for the holidays due to her battle with breast cancer. Patricia Clarkson was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for her portrayal of Joy Burns.
