4. Twin Peaks (1990 – 1991, 2017)

How to watch: Seasons 1-2 included with Prime, Twin Peaks: The Return included with Showtime on Amazon for $10.00/month.

Even if you’ve never watched Twin Peaks before, odds are you’ve heard of it. Twin Peaks is an immensely popular mystery horror drama series that debuted in 1990. It was created by the master of surrealism, David Lynch.

The central focus of the series was on the murder of Laura Palmer. There are a great many television shows out there that begins with the murder of a homecoming queen in a small town, almost all of them owe some inspiration to Twin Peaks.

What made the series so compelling beyond the element of horror and suspense surrounding Palmer’s death, was its campy, eccentric characters and district offbeat humor. David Lynch is known for imbibing all of his work with distinct camera-work and elements of surrealism.

Bryan Fuller, the creator of American Gods, attributes Lynch as one of his cinematic icons. During a panel at the Vulture Festival, Bustle reports Fuller speaking about Lynch’s impact on his work. He claims he was drawn to the works of David Lynch because of his ability to make real life seem like a “fever dream.” Without the impact of Twin Peaks, a series like American Gods might not exist today.

If you intend on watching Twin Peaks, once you’ve watched the initial two seasons, you’ll want to check out the 2017 revival series.
