5. Westworld (2016 – present)

How to watch: Included with HBO on Amazon for $14.99/month after trial

If you love American Gods for its beautiful visuals and mind-bending logic, then Westworld should be right up your alley. The series is based on the 1973 film of the same name and produced by HBO.

Westworld is a science fiction western television series. Westworld itself is an amusement park unlike any you’ve ever seen before. In Westworld, you won’t find teacup rides and roller coasters but instead a hyper-realistic, technologically advanced world full of androids.

These androids look, feel, and even speak like real humans. Their sole purpose is to help guests fulfill their most indulgent fantasies. The idea is an intriguing one but as one might expect with any series that deigns to force robots into doing their bidding, uprising bubbles to the surface.

Westworld asks probing philosophical questions about the meaning of life, morality, and if humans can truly create sentience in another being. If the androids become sensitive to the world around them, then is it right to continue treating them as if they are nothing more than a piece of tech?

Thus far, Westworld has had two well-received seasons. A third season is on its way and set to premiere sometime in 2020. The series has garnered plenty of awards attention and stars notable actors such as Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, James Marden, Tessa Thompson, and Anthony Hopkins. Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) will join the show for its third outing.
