8. Hot Summer Nights (2018)

Hot Summer Nights flew on the radar when it debuted last year. The movie stars Timothee Chalamet as a young teenager in Cape Cod who gets in way over his head while delivering drugs with a local rebel.

It’s a stylized thriller that didn’t quite make the splash people were expecting it to with critics. It will certainly set the mood of the summer though considering the film takes place during the season. It also stars Maika Monroe as Chalemet’s love interest.

7. The Florida Project (2017)

Despite receiving numerous accolades and award nominations, The Florida Project was still mostly underrated film in a crowded 2017 Academy Awards race. The film was directed by Sean Baker, the mastermind behind another brilliant film, Tangerine. Baker’s movies have an affinity for representing the people who often get lost in the cracks and he douses them in mesmerizing color palettes.

The Florida Project focuses on six-year-old Moonee (played by Brooklynn Prince in her breakout role) as she explores the motel compound she and her mother live at. The film takes place predominantly during the summer months. It is an enriching slice of life story that I highly recommend checking out.
