10 questions we have for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3
2. Will Shy restrict Midge on what she can talk about on stage?
Throughout The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2, Midge was continually restricted about what she could talk about. When she ribbed on other acts, the men couldn’t take it – although they were happy to rib on her. Then when she started talking about all sorts of women’s issues, she was kicked off the stage because it was “disgusting.”
One thing the show has always done is be faithful to the time period. I wasn’t irate at the writers for including the restrictions against Midge because they were just right for the 1950s. But I am curious about whether Midge will be restricted in her act while on tour.
Different countries will have different expectations. Will she need to change her act in each location? Well, she already does that but will she change it based on expectations of what female comics talk about?
Will Shy restrict her? He’ll be used to being restricted himself. It would feel odd if he acted against her in this way. However, it’s his tour and up to him at the end of the day.
1. Will Midge finally be accepted fully as a comic?
What will this tour lead to? Will we finally see Midge fully accepted into the world of comics?
The public have taken to her. They find her funny and they want to see her more. The pushback has been from the men. Lenny Bruce has been a vocal supporter of her and helped get her out of the black holes her and Susie’s actions have sometimes forced her in. However, there are others who still hold her back.
A tour is a big deal. It’s a sign that she’s making it. The success she had at the charity thon made it clear that she’s good. So, is it time for her to be fully accepted?
I doubt this is going to happen. As much as I would love to see it, there will always be some views that won’t change. Those who view her as just another female comic won’t listen to reason. Those who don’t think women should be doing anything at all except raising babies and running the house won’t be interested in giving her the time of day.
However, this will be a chance to see her grow. I also suspect we’ll see her get a regular spot at both the Gaslight and Joel’s new club – in fact, I have a feeling she may be the one that helps Joel’s club get off the ground.
