2. Dexter

Perhaps the most pivotal “serial killer” series of our time, Dexter revolutionized the way we see murderers on primetime television. The series is a dark crime drama that focuses on Dexter Morgan, played by the incredible Michael C. Hall. Dexter is indeed a serial killer, but he prides himself on following a strict moral code of conduct. He doesn’t kill innocent people, only those who have done horrible things to other people.

Essentially, he serves as something of a vigilante, but Dexter doesn’t approach the character like that. Instead, the series acknowledges that he is still a criminal, even if his prey is other criminals. One of the key relationships in the series involves the bond between Dexter and his foster-sister, Deborah Morgan. Despite being raised by the same man, Deborah never had the same kind of craving for blood that Dexter developed. Both she and her brother work at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Dexter is a blood splatter analyst who uses his job to scope out potential new victims. He only ever pursues the truly heinous criminals of the world such as rapists, child molesters, abusers, and other serial killers. Most seasons involve a core mystery for Dexter to solve, generally involving other murderers in the Miami area.
