7. The Affair

As the name of the show suggests, The Affair is a psychological drama and mystery series that explores the impact of an extramarital affair between Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Lockhart (Ruth Wilson).

Alison is a waitress struggling with depression in the aftermath of her four-year-old son’s tragic death. She is attempting to put her marriage with Cole (Joshua Jackson) back together, whereas Noah’s family is actually in a good situation for the most part. He and his wife, Helen (Maura Tierney) are happily married, but Noah harbors some resentment towards his wife and children.

The Affair is a gripping, albeit frustrating, series with alternating perspectives to allow you to understand there are “two sides to every story” fully. All the main characters get various episodes focusing on their point-of-view of significant events in the series. If you’re a fan of the unreliable narrator trope and you enjoy psychology-heavy stories, then I highly suggest you give The Affair a watch.

Like many of Showtime’s other series, The Affair has received copious amounts of critical acclaim and awards attention. At the 72nd Golden Globes Awards show, Ruth Wilson took home the Globe for Best Actress in a Drama and The Affair won Best Drama. Showtime has renewed the series for a fifth and final season. It is expected to air sometime later this year.
