1. Penny Dreadful

I’ve saved the best for last: Penny Dreadful. It’s one of my favorite shows of all time.

If you’ve heard the term “penny dreadful” before, you may have a sense of what the series is about. The term refers to 19th-century British fiction with lurid and sometimes sensual subject matter. Penny Dreadful features a myriad of public domain characters from the 19th century such as Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, Frankenstein’s monster, Henry Jekyll, Mina Harper, and even Dracula himself.

Eva Green’s character, Vanessa Ives, was the beating heart of the series as a troubled woman who struggled with demons, both real and imagined. Her character was forced into a constant battle with creatures from the underworld.

If you’re a horror fan, then Penny Dreadful is a must-watch. It’s still one of the shows to execute a superb and scary storyline featuring witches. The second season is sublime. Sadly, Penny Dreadful was canceled after only three seasons, but the good news is, the series is getting a revival.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has been ordered to series by Showtime. It is due to start production later this year. While it won’t feature any of the same characters as its predecessors, it will have the same showrunner and many familiar names behind the camera. City of Angels will be set in 1938 Los Angeles and focus on Mexican-American folklore.
