Love Story by Erich Segal

Love Story is The Fault in Our Stars of our parents’ generation. While a romance, it is tinged with tragedy that will make you reach for the tissue box by the end of the book.

Oliver is a wealthy man, attending Harvard to earn a law degree.  Jenny is a working-class woman attending Radcliffe to get a degree in music. Two opposite, who naturally become very attracted to one another.

The book follows the two of them as they fall in love in college, and the hardships they face as a young, newly married couple. And dealing with something that no young couple should ever have to face in their lives.

Published in 1970, the book was turned into a very successful, and very well translated, movie adaptation.  If you’re not satisfied with ending the story with this book, there is a sequel, but having read it myself, it doesn’t hold up to the first book.

A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole

Another paranormal romance and a series, A Hunger Like No Other is actually the second book in the Immortals After Dark book series, but most of the books can stand on their own.

Lachlain MacRieve is the leader of the Lykae Clan. And he’s just learned his predestined mate is a vampire. While not ideal, he soon learns that this half vampire/half Valkyrie is good for him, and his soul.

Emmeline is trying to solve the mystery about the deaths of her parents when she is whisked away by Lachlain to his Scottish castle. Her fear of Lykae is strong until she gets to know him, and their passions grow. As the mysteries of Emmeline’s past start to encroach on her present, her love with Lachlain is the only thing that will make her strong enough to fight.

Published in 2006, this book is part of the 15-book Immortals After Dark series. So if you enjoy this book, there’s plenty of material out there for you to continue.
