Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

If you’re looking for a good classic romance, look no further than Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre follows title character Jane as she grows up in an orphanage and eventually goes to work for Mr. Rochester as his governess. The two fall in love over their mutual love for academics, however, on their wedding day a secret is revealed that drives Jane away. Of course, it wouldn’t be a romance if they stayed apart for good, and the two are eventually reunited.

Set in the English moors in a large Gothic mansion, this book, originally published in 1847, stands the test of time and doesn’t feel like it’s too far removed from today. The characters are easy to relate to, and the love story is just as powerful.

You can find your copy of the novel here.

The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

The Notebook is probably a book most everyone is familiar with at this point, or you’re at least familiar with the movie adaptation.

The story follows Noah and Allie as their love story is told throughout several decades. Noah is working class and Allie is a wealthy socialite, but they fall in love and have a whirlwind affair. Until Noah goes off to war, and Allie’s mom thwarts any further romance between the two.

After the war, the two find each other and decide to be with each other against all odds. And against the wishes of her family. Their romance is truly one that spans across a lifetime.

Published in 2000, this book is a very Nicholas Sparks novel. Make sure you read it with some tissue handy.
