2. The Quiet Ones
When you want horror, The Quiet Ones is the place to turn from the Feb. 1 releases. Made in 2014, it’s the youngest movie on this list of five. When an unorthodox college professor decides to take some of his best students off the grid to create a poltergeist, everything that could go wrong does go wrong.
The processor operates under the theory that negative human energy is what creates paranormal activities. That means, he needs to push each of the students to the edge, putting them into some of the most stressful situations they’ve ever been in. There’s a risk to their sanity throughout the movie.
Does it create the poltergeist that he wants? I’m not going to ruin the movie for you, but there are certainly some terrifying manifestations involved.
There are plenty of stars you’ll recognize in the movie, including The Hunger Games‘ Sam Claflin, Ready Player One‘s Olivia Cooke, and Mad Men‘s Jared Harris. This is one of those movies that isn’t for everyone, with plenty of jump scares and special effects. It’s also based on a true story.
However, if you love the likes of Let Me In and The Woman in Black and like movies set in the past, this is going to be one to watch. At least it’s something other than the Super Bowl!
