5. Interstellar

Date it premiere: Nov. 7, 2014

Financial and critical acclaim:  With a $165m budget, there was a lot riding on this movie. Only making $47.5m on opening weekend, it was worrying but it would pull in $188m gross and $675m worldwide.

Despite the slow start financially, Interstellar walked away one Oscar for the visual effects, along with nominations for music and sound. It has a 72% Tomatometer reading on Rotten Tomatoes and 85% from the audience.

Why we loved it: Interstellar was a lofty movie but with Christopher Nolan at the helm, it was always going to be good. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, it put both in roles that we’d rarely seen them in from past work.

This is a space movie for those who don’t even love space disaster movies. It pulls the philosophical debate and adds emotion, something that Nolan has managed to do time and time again. There’s a beauty in the different planets, making them stand out and creating a graphically satisfying and entertaining movie.
