1. The Princess Diaries

The last movie on the list is all about change and finding yourself. It’s the perfect message for New Year and one of Anne Hathaway’s greatest movies ever. Yes, The Princess Diaries is a must for New Year’s Day.

This is one of those movies for the whole family. It’s perfect for children of all ages and you’ll find something adorable about it as an adult — even if it is just watching Julie Andrews on screen again.

The Princess Diaries is about Mia Thermopolis, a wallflower and one of the nerdiest girls in school. One day, she learns that she’s the princess of a small European country and is destined to be the queen when her grandmother dies.

While it’s a fairly standard, family-friendly movie in terms of storyline, it’s beautifully and hilariously written. The characters have some good development and there are plenty of lessons for children and adults to learn. New Year’s Day is the perfect time to watch it, as we all start looking at things to change about ourselves or finding a way to accept ourselves for who we really are.

The Princess Diaries is available to rent or buy through Amazon. Like the others, I highly recommend buying so you can watch it whenever you want. Don’t forget to follow up with The Princess Diaries 2, which features Julie Andrews singing for the first time since she lost the ability to sing due to an operation on her vocal cords.
