8. Gabriel — Supernatural

Season & episode: Season 13, Episode 22

What happened: In Supernatural Season 13, we had a lot of shocking returns. Gabriel was most definitely one of them. If only that shocking return could have stuck around for a little longer. As the Winchesters got the alternate hunters from the Apocalypse World, Gabriel made a sacrifice to hold Michael at bay.

It didn’t last long. After a short fight, Michael killed Gabriel with the archangel blade.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: C’mon, this is the Trickster. Is Gabriel really dead? That’s the big question, but for the sake of this post, he is.

Gabriel’s death wasn’t expected. In this episode alone, he and Castiel had discussed him going to Heaven and stop being the screw-up. There was hope and we got the start of a redemption arc that was over long before he had the chance to actually redeem himself.

While we saw Michael killing someone, it wasn’t Gabriel. He was the one character many of us thought (and hoped) would make it through.

7. Halfdan — Vikings

Season & episode: Season 5, Episode 10

What happened: During the battle between Lagatha and Ivar’s armies, it became a battle of brother against brother. Ubbe and Hvitserk had already faced off against each other and decided to walk away to fight other foe. Halfdan and Harald wouldn’t decide to do the same.

In a shocking twist, Harald killed his own brother. We got to see that moment of Halfdan in the middle of the desert as he realized he was in the afterlife.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Considering it was the Vikings Season 5A finale, there had to be something big happen. We knew that this battle would lead to a major death. Many likely thought that it would be one of the brothers again.

When Astrid was killed, I was sure that would be it. I didn’t think we’d see a moment of Harald vs. Halfdan. With brilliant cinematography, I found myself in awe at the way it all played out.
