10. Alvin Olinksy — Chicago PD

Season & episode: Season 5, Episode 22

What happened: In the previous episode, Olinksy had been stabbed multiple times. It was the finale that saw him brought into Chicago Med for the finest doctors to work on him. Unfortunately, fate wasn’t on his side and he died from his injuries.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Olinsky had become the heart of the mess thanks to Voight’s actions previously. Taking the fall for a friend, he ended up in prison but there was always this hope that he would make it out eventually.

In the end, Voight’s actions needed to cost him something. That something was the death of a mentor and a friend. Just like how it shocked Voight, it shocked us to the core. Considering Olinksy had said “I got this,” we hoped he really had it and would make it out alive.

9. Jaha — The 100

Season & episode: Season 5, Episode 2

What happened: While trying to fix issues in the bunker, Jaha was injured thanks to a Grounder. Octavia found him, where he was able to impart some wisdom before he finally died.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: There isn’t much to say about Jaha’s death. After all, his death wasn’t exactly shocking. The 100 made it clear that Isaiah Washington wouldn’t return as a series regular for the whole of the fifth season. We knew something would happen.

The bit that shocked us was the fact that he had a chance to go out as a hero. As one of the most controversial characters on the show, many of us expected him to be the villain. Yet, his dying moment was to give Octavia the advice and strength she needed to be the leader of Wonkru.

Plus, I personally adored him. The decisions he made were always difficult and made him seem like the bad guy. He was willing to be the villain so the majority could survive. This was another sacrifice he was willing to make for the good of everyone else.
