14. Dede Pritchett — Modern Family
Season & episode: Season 10, Episode 5
What happened: During a trip with her woman’s group, Dede died in her sleep. It happened off-screen, as the focus was on dealing with death afterward.
Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Modern Family promised us a character death in Season 10. Little did we know it would happen in the Halloween episode. Dede was the victim and despite knowing it could happen, it was still shocking when it did.
One thing that came out of it was a beautifully created episode. The family members spent their time honoring her throughout. This was all about how death can come when you least expect it, and yes, it certainly did.

13. Levon — iZombie
Season & episode: Season 4, Episode 13
What happened: Levon and Liv had been arrested for their part in smuggling terminally ill people and turning them into zombies. The sentence was death and Levon was taken to the head-smashing guillotine first. Yet again, a boyfriend of Liv died.
Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: There was finally a chance for Liv to be happy. After a running track of boyfriends dying, there was this hope that she had met someone who could hold himself. Levon was good, sweet, and honest. In fact, when Liv was on Playa Brain, he was honorable and refused to be with her.
And then at the end of the fourth season, he was killed with the guillotine. It happened off screen, and in a way that was a good thing. The focus was on Liv’s face. Throughout this scene, we hoped there was a chance the guillotine wouldn’t fall but it wasn’t meant to be.
