18. Kevin Tran — Supernatural

Season & episode: Season 13, Episode 20

What happened: When Mary and Jack went to check out why Apocalypse Michael’s church was abandoned, they came across Apocalypse Kevin. He’d been completely brainwashed by Michael and became a suicide bomber to get rid of as many of the resistance as possible.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: I know what you initially thought when you saw the name: Kevin Tran died in Season 9. Yes, he did, but this is all about Apocalypse World Kevin, the prophet for Michael in the AU World.

If I’m honest, on one hand, the death wasn’t that shocking. He’d been brainwashed and there was really no other way out for him. It was the manner of his death that puts him on this list. Did anyone really see Kevin become a suicide bomber? After years of watching the series, I certainly didn’t!

17. Jack Pearson — This Is Us

Season & episode: Season 2, Episode 14

What happened: In the Super Bowl Sunday episode, we finally got the answer to the burning question from the last year and a half: how Jack died. As the family home burned, he ran inside to save the dog. Heroic, yes.

But it would be a moment Kate would regret for the rest of her life. While he didn’t die in the fire, Jack did die of smoke inhalation and had a heart attack in the hospital.

Why it was one of the most shocking TV deaths: Like with Kevin’s death, Jack’s death wasn’t exactly shocking. We knew that it was going to happen. There’s no doubt about that since this is a series that is told over two timelines.

The manner of the death was what shocked us the most. We’d spent a season and a half wonder and we found out all about it in a Super Bowl Sunday special, aptly titled “Super Bowl Sunday.” This Is Us tugged at the heartstrings again and left us guessing throughout what it would be that would take Jack from his family.
