The Rookie

Network: ABC

Number of seasons: 1

Why it’s in danger of being canceled: I umm’d and ahh’d about having The Rookie on the list. Part of me didn’t want it on here, but then another part of me is worried about the Nathan Fillion drama. It’s just not pulling in the ratings that the network probably hoped for.

This was one of the last ABC freshmen shows to get extra episodes ordered. It feels like those episodes were given because it’s Nathan Fillion rather than the show’s success.

However, I could (and hope to) be proven wrong. Yet, out of all the ABC freshmen shows, this is the one that I’m most worried about.

Van Helsing

Network: SYFY

Number of seasons: 3

Why it’s in danger of being canceled: I’ll be honest and say that this show is on the bubble. Even the showrunners know that. In fact, the production team and writers asked a few weeks ago to make sure that fans tuned in live as much as they could. If they dipped, it was clear SYFY would cancel them.

This is also after moving from Thursdays to Fridays. However, there are a few things working in its favor. It’s ranking higher than Nightflyers, the freshman series based on George R.R. Martin’s novella and higher than Channel Zero.

Yet, Channel Zero has an international fanbase that Van Helsing hasn’t gained. With deals with the likes of Shudder, Channel Zero has the chance of staying for another season, but the vampire-based series may just be in a saturated genre.

Van Helsing Season 4 has been confirmed with a new showrunner. The announcement was made on Dec. 18, 2018.
