2. Upload

While many broadcast networks are sticking to some of the same comedy styles of the 1990s (CBS and NBC, I’m mostly looking at you), Amazon is bringing something different. Upload is the new offering from Greg Daniels that is far more than just some sci-fi comedy.

Set in the future of 2033, we get a world of hand-phones, self-driving cars, and a digital afterlife. Everyone can choose to be uploaded to this digital afterlife, giving them a chance to live forever if they want. Of course, it comes at a price, and we get a chance to see the various class levels within the world—although I get the feeling there are more.

While there is the comedy of getting used to the world, we also have a romance developing. On top of that, there’s a murder mystery to figure out. All these genres wouldn’t usually gel together, but Greg Daniels makes them flow together effortlessly.

The VFX for the digital world is brilliant. There’s a grounded reality, but at the same time, we have this world that’s digitized. There are moments you’re reminded of that, whether it’s the in-app purchases or the glitches you’ll spot now and then. We can’t forget the AI!

Upload proved to be so great that it was renewed for a second season a week after its release.
