5. The Canal

Indie movies really are some of the creepiest movies out there. That’s certainly the case when it comes to Ivan Kavanagh’s The Canal. It all starts with a man discovering a grisly crime that took place in his home a century ago. However, the “who dun it” ghost story twist isn’t the usual pattern this one falls. Instead, we’re taken through a psychological thriller that will leave those with even the strongest minds sleeping with the light on.

There are certainly elements from other movies throughout, especially when it comes to The Shining. However, there’s plenty of dread and fear throughout. There’s a weak spot in the last 15 minutes, but not enough to make this a bad movie.

The Man in the High Castle fans will certainly be interested in this as Rupert Evans is the lead in this grisly movie. And yes, he gets to keep his British accent.

4. We Are What We Are

A remake of the Mexican movie of the same name, We Are What We Are is the horror movie for those who love creepy tales of family secrets and long-held traditions. What looks like a normal family turns out to be one with a history of cannibalism and religious observances. Yes, you read that right. Cannibalism.

It’s not Texas Chainsaw Massacre cannibalism, but more on the lines or religious practices and sacrifices. And this isn’t just about the victims but about the family, as they find themselves torn apart when the younger generations decide they’re not quite certain they want to continue with this path.

This is one of those movies that leaves a mark, as you start to question everything you do as a family. That’s an excellent way to end Halloween.
