Jordan Peele making Amazon series about Lorena Bobbitt scandal

Jordan Peele is fresh off a winning an Oscar for Get Out and now he’ll be making a show for Amazon about the Lorena Bobbitt scandal.

Amazon has successfully landed an Oscar-winning writer to make an Original series in one of their biggest coups for Amazon Studios. Jordan Peele was the big star of the last year-plus for his work writing and directing Get Out. And now, he’s bringing his talents to Amazon where he’ll make a series about the Lorena Bobbitt scandal that rocked the nation in the early-90s.

This will be a four-part docu-drama that re-examines the story that tabloids turned into a circus involving Lorena Bobbitt and John Wayne. The docu-drama will be shaped for the #MeToo era, according to Amazon.

"“Lost in the tabloid coverage and jokes was the opportunity for a national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America,” the press release says, via Entertainment Weekly, noting that the series is timed to the 25th anniversary of the case."

For those who were too young to remember the story that was the subject of national headlines, not just in the tabloids, but also mocked on late-night shows, the series won’t make light of the incident. Lorena said she was raped by her husband the same day she used a knife to cut off a piece of his anatomy. It was surgically reattached and a trial was underway.

The sensational act of the incident was ridiculed and mocked endlessly, but what was lost in the conversation was the act of the sexual assault from her husband. Lorena’s story hasn’t been told and it hasn’t been examined to reflect the issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault. The Lorena series will tackle that with Peele leading the way.

“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” Peele says, via Entertainment Weekly. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

There is no release date set for Lorena and there is still much that needs to be shored up before that will be released. But as soon as the casting announcements and production schedule is revealed, we’ll provide all of that information to the readers eager to see the next project from Peele.
