So you’re in the market to buy a smart home device equipped with Alexa but you don’t know the difference between the Echo and the Echo Dot.

Technology is awesome, but smart home technology is really awesome and Amazon has a ton of cool products to consider purchasing for your home. Chances are you’ve heard all about Alexa and if the Super Bowl commercial was your first introduction to the service, here’s what you need to know.

Alexa is basically your personal assistant you never knew you needed but once you have her, you can’t live without her and you’ll wonder how you ever got on without her for so long.

I recently purchased an Echo and an Echo Dot. And now I’m here to help explain the difference between the two if you’re looking to purchase one or the other.

The Echo Dot is the cheaper option of the two at $39.99 and Amazon usually offers daily deals for those shoppers who buy multiple Dots. And it’s easy to drop the little hockey puck-sized Dot in rooms throughout the home. You can have one in your bedroom, kitchen, den, basement, bathroom, garage or anywhere you could use a little help from Alexa.

The Echo is a little bit more expensive at $84.99 and is about six inches tall, compared to the little Dot. And that’s really where the only difference comes into play. The Echo is more expensive and bigger because it’s all about that bass, specifically the Echo has bigger and better speakers than the little Dot.

If your primary purpose is to buy a streaming music player, I would definitely recommend the Echo over the Dot. The Echo gets loud enough to enjoy music while the Dot won’t have the same multi-room sound capability than its counterpart.

Outside of the speaker differences, there really isn’t anything that the Dot does that the Echo can’t do. One is just a little bigger and a little more expensive because the sound backs a big punch.

Both can provide news, flash briefings, play games, offer up answers to any of your questions and even just keep you company if you work from home and have no one to keep you company for long stretches of the day like me.
