Amazon is developing a new series based on Conan The Barbarian based on Robert E. Howard’s Conan books.

Conan The Barbarian is coming to Amazon. According to Deadline, Amazon is developing a TV show around the character made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan The Barbarian and the far less popular sequel Conan The Destroyer.

The team developing the show should give fans a lot of optimism that the show will be done right and now fall victim to the Jason Momoa-led Conan movie that tanked at the box office in 2011. Colony’s Ryan Condal is writing the series that is going by the name Conan, not to be confused with the red-headed talk show host, with Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik on board to direct and The Handmaid’s Tale producer Warren Littlefield on bard to executive produce. That’s some serious cache for the series that figures to be action-packed and full of violence and could attract fans of Game of Thrones, Vikings, The Last Kingdom and shows of that genre.

According to Deadline’s report, Conan will tell a modern reimaging of the character from Howard’s books.

"“Driven out of his tribal homelands, Conan wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage.”"

It was only a few months ago that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos issued a mandate to Amazon Studios that they better find the next Game of Thrones. Now, that’s very aspirational, but it was a motivating tool for the e-commerce giant that’s clearly losing the streaming wars to Netflix and Hulu that they better find shows that can appeal to a wide audience base and have some serious clout when it comes to influencing people to buy a membership to Amazon Prime to watch on Amazon Video.

I’m pretty optimistic about the series, but will reserbe judgment until the cast is announced, specifically after the actor playing Conan is announced. I loved the original movie when I was younger and think with the right actor, it can be a really good TV show, and helping in that regard is a stellar writer, director and producer on board. Armed with Amazon’s checkbook, hopefully, they’ll be able to get a great actor to play Conan.
