The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Rachel Brosnahan talks about landing role of a lifetime
Golden Globe winner Rachel Brosnahan recently talked about her audition process for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which was anything but ordinary.
The “It girl” at the moment is none other than the star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Rachel Brosnahan. Fresh off a win at the Golden Globes for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, Brosnahan is set for superstardom but it almost never came to be.
It’s true, Brosnahan had to cancel her first audition with Amy Sherman-Palladino and husband Daniel Palladino, the two co-showrunners for the Amazon Original series due to an awful illness. She was bedridden and just couldn’t summon the strength or energy to make it to the audition. Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of it, because she was able to reschedule, but was still under the weather and admittedly didn’t feel or look very well or healthy.
Nevertheless, she booked the cross-country flight from New York to Los Angeles for her audition and before she could even return to the Big Apple afterward, she learned she booked the role. Little did she know that role would be a career-maker for the young actress.
Brosnahan shared her experience from her audition process and how she landed the part of Midge on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast.
"“I got a phone call earlier that same day saying that I had lost a part in a movie because they really liked me, they thought I was great, but I just wasn’t funny. And then a couple of hours later, I got this call about Maisel, and I was like, very confused.”"
This is just so awesome. When I’m under the weather, I can barely muster up the strength or energy to get out of bed and turn my computer on to write an article. I could never imagine traveling cross-country and auditioning for a role that required enthusiasm and all sorts of pep.
Thankfully the Palladino’s recognized the talent they saw in Brosnahan, who earned an Emmy nomination for her guest appearance on House of Cards, which made me first fall in love with her work. They knew an illness wouldn’t stop them from getting the actress to audition, even if it meant having to be a bit patient.

With The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel already picked up for a second season before the two Golden Globe wins, there is a chance this will end up being the most successful Amazon Original show of all time and it’s all because Brosnahan wasn’t going to let the flu stop her from a career-defining opportunity.
