The 5 most popular Amazon Prime Video shows of September 2017
The results are in and these are the five most popular Amazon shows on Prime Video from September and the results are rather surprising.
Amazon, like Netflix and Hulu don’t reveal their viewer data and ratings like the cable and networks do. The streamers operate in a different, albeit a related universe, but now there is some independent date from Parrot Analytics that can shed some light on what people are really streaming.
Their data was used in a feature in The Hollywood Reporter that found the most popular shows on the streaming services over the last month, and compared those views to TV viewers and how YouTube is still the place people are streaming video the most. Although, that’s an entirely different animal altogether.
Parrot Analytics used a demand expressions formula based on streams, viewers, engagement and other factors to come up with their findings. And their findings for the most popular Amazon shows for September were pretty surprising.
- The Man in the High Castle
- The Grand Tour
- Transparent
- Comrade Detective
- The Last Tycoon
The most popular Amazon show for September was The Man in the High Castle. The show is fantastic and I recommend everyone should watch the show. I’m just surprised it took the top spot considering the most recent season was released nine months ago. The fact it’s more popular than any other show on Amazon suggests the show is really good and people are discovering it every day. But, how is there not a new, fresh show that people were flocking to Amazon to watch?
No. 2 isn’t all that surprising as The Grand Tour has some international appeal and can attract a larger audience. It’s a fun show to watch, but it’s a different format than your standard hour-long drama.
Transparent is the flagship show for Amazon and season 4 was released on Sept. 22, so it’s no shock to see the show on this list, but it’s surprising it didn’t take the top spot. Perhaps it signals the show has hit its peak and it doesn’t have the same appeal as it did in its first three seasons? Either way, this should be viewed as disappointing for Amazon.
Comrade Detective was heavily promoted by Amazon prior to its August release and had Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached, but it hasn’t really made a crossover into the pop culture lexicon and been a watercooler show.
Coming in fifth was The Last Tycoon which premiered at the end of July and was promptly canceled shortly thereafter. I bet more people started watching after the cancellation to see what the show was about and how bad it could have been considering it was canceled that quickly.

The most surprising aspect of this study is the absence of The Tick. Prior to the Aug. 25 premiere date, I don’t recall any other Amazon Original series that got as much publicity and hype in 2017 than this show. There were ads all over Amazon, there were commercials all over TV and promoted tweets were abundant on Twitter. How could it not be one of the most popular shows on Amazon for September has to represent a complete and total bust for this show.
Are you a fan of the five most popular Amazon shows from September? Were you watching any or all of them? What shows did you watch the most in September that surprised you that didn’t make the cut? Are you as shocked as I am about the omission of The Tick?
