Michigan football will be the subject of a new documentary series that will premiere in 2018 and document the events of the current season for the Wolverines.

Amazon Prime Video is trying to change their focus as they attempt to compete with Netflix and an ever-fluctuating and competitive TV landscape. Amazon has had success with their Emmy-winning documentary series All or Nothing, which provides a behind the scenes look at NFL teams during their season. Considering that formula works, Amazon is double-dipping and using that same approach, but on the college level.

The Michigan Wolverines will have their own eight-part docu-series that will follow the team during the 2017 season and will include footage from their 2017 season.

A snippet of the press release can be read below:

"“We are proud to partner with Amazon Prime Video in documenting our University of Michigan student-athletes’ daily experiences and the lifelong lessons learned both on the football field and in the classroom,” said Michigan’s J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh. “We welcome judgment! We embrace this opportunity to showcase our 2017 University of Michigan football team to a vast audience around the world.”"

I can’t get enough of this type of content and I’m thrilled to see a closer, behind-the-scenes look at head coach Jim Harbaugh. He’s easily one of the best personalities in college football and I think viewers will have a newfound appreciation for him after watching this series, except for Ohio State and Michigan State fans.

HBO has Hard Knocks and Netflix has Last Chance U, so now Amazon can use this unique partnership with the Big Ten Network to possibly produce more content similar to this. Perhaps this can be a recurring series with different programs having a show in both football and basketball? I’d watch it.

This programming further signals Amazon’s push into sports programming. Amazon will begin streaming Thursday Night Football games on Sept. 28 and has 10 games they’ll have this year. They’ve expressed interest in rights to other networks as well as Amazon looks to expand their reach and get eyeballs watching content on their service.

Sports will never go stale so it’s a great concept and something Netflix hasn’t shown any interest in doing, so this sounds like a great way to bridge that gap.

When we have a release date and official title for the Michigan series, we will be sure to pass that information along.
