4. “Happier”

I don’t know how Ed continues to do it, but this song is so incredibly mature. It is the same raw nature we have gotten from him the entire album. Over and over Sheeran professes his love for this girl, but he is willing to let her go if she is happier.

The Feels: The bounce between wanting them back and wanting them to be happy is another relatable subject. Ed discovers this emptiness as he takes responsibility in the song for his wrongs, but tries to confess why he is the better candidate.

The Lyrics: Happier is the best name for this song because when you read the title you expect it to be upbeat, but you get this real, honest depiction of love and loss. For that, I applaud you Sheeran.

The Beat: The soft guitar and piano add to the ease of Ed’s acceptance into the new lover, but the tempo speeds up as we realize that Sheeran is not as happy as he wants us to think. Genius.
