Master Legend is one of five Amazon Pilots hoping for a full season pick up, so let’s discuss the merits and the chances it happens.

Amazon Pilot Season is underway with five pilots in the running for a full season order. Amazon has provided a survey for viewers to provide their thoughts, opinions and general feedback as a way to determine if the pilots will get picked up. Over the course of the week, I will be providing my review for the five pilots and offering my thoughts about the fate of the show. This review takes us to The Legend of Master Legend, starring John Hawkes as a real-life superhero in Las Vegas.

The series is based on a Rolling Stone article by Joshuah Bearman and the episode was co-written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. Starring alongside Hawkes is Robert Longstreet, Shea Whigham, Dawnn Wells, Eugene Cordero, Michael Grant Terry, Jennifer Irwin and Anjelika Washington.

Amazon provides the official episode synopsis for The Legend of Master Legend:

"THE LEGEND OF MASTER LEGEND is a dark comedy about the life of Master Legend – a real life superhero whose mission is the security and safety of the people of Las Vegas. Master Legend juggles the demands of justice with the even more complicated demands of his real family, who don’t see him as a hero at all."

Before watching the pilot, I was excited to see the latest project from Hawkes who I’ve enjoyed since Deadwood, and the plot summary sounded pretty interesting that I was ready to give it a shot. This is definitely not your ordinary superhero show and can’t be compared to anything from Marvel or DC.

This is more of a dark comedy about a broken family than a stereotypical superhero series, at least that was the perception from the 30-minute pilot. There were some laughs, there were some awkward cringe-worthy moments and there is a backstory worth exploring with Master Legend. I want to know about his family, why is he living in a storage shed, what is this secret group of vigilantes he’s built and how did he get where he is now?

Overall, I think there’s some potential here and it’s largely based on Hawkes who I’d watch in just about anything. Superhero shows have been plentiful in recent years, but this is a fresh spin and I’m wanting to take a ride with it to see where it goes. I’d definitely recommend watching the pilot and would urge Amazon to order a full season order of episodes.
