It’s Amazon Pilot Season and Budding Prospects is one of the prospective shows looking for a full season order but will it come? Let’s discuss.

Amazon released five pilots on Friday, March 17 and the fate of those five will hinge on the response from the viewers. A short survey is available for viewers to answer some questions about the pilot they just watched and to offer their thoughts and opinions on it to determine whether it should get a full season order from Amazon.

Over the next few days, I will review each of the pilots, beginning with Budding Prospects, and give my thoughts on the episode and whether I think it will get picked up for a full season by Amazon.

Budding Prospects stars Natalie Morales, Joel David Moore, Will Sasso, Brett Gelman, Adam Rose, Nina Cheek, Cyrina Fiallo, Michael X. Sommers and Joey Ruggiero. The pilot was directed by Terry Zwigoff, the director for Bad Santa. The show is set in 1983 and is three guys who become marijuana farmers. Amazon provides the official synopsis below.

"In 1983, three hapless guys from San Francisco are lured from their sex and drugs lifestyle to the countryside to grow marijuana. They find themselves stuck in a run-down cabin in the middle of nowhere, with harsh and unfriendly growing conditions, nosy neighbors, dangerous locals, and menacing law enforcement."

First off, I was intrigued with Zwigoff directing and the cast features some familiar faces like Morales, Moore, Sasso, Rose and Gelman. Plus, the subject sounded like it had some potential for some great laughs and sticky situations (pun intended) when it comes to neighbors and the police meddling in their business. There were a few funny moments that offered potential when we get a chance to see the characters develop and storylines come to fruition. Nevertheless, I wanted to see more, because I like the story, the characters and I think there is plenty of material for a full season’s worth of episodes.

I give my vote for Budding Prospects to get a full season order to see where this story goes and if they become the next marijuana tycoons or if they end up in a prison cell somewhere.
