21. Equals

Release Year: 2016

Written By: Nathan Parker

Directed By: Drake Doremus

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver

Another film starring Kristen Stewart, who incidentally appears to be the queen of romantic movies (just count her five-year tenure as the Twilight saga’s lead heroine Bella Swan as evidence), Equals dives into a dystopian society where it’s illegal to feel emotions.

Despite this, Nia (Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult) strike up a forbidden love affair and plot their escape from the stifling society in order to be together in outlawed happiness. Equals shares similarities to The Lobster, though the film incorporates a stylized element of science fiction that brings this world to life.

Produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Drake Doremus—who helmed the romantic drama Like Crazy starring Felicity Jones, Anton Yelchin, and Jennifer Lawrence—Equals features an unbeatable cast and a captivating premise fit to reinforce the importance and privilege of being able to feel love.
