Labeled as an absurdist dystopian black comedy, the singles among us on Valentine’s Day better be glad The Lobster’s premise doesn’t govern real life. In short, those without valentine dates would have even more undue pressure thrust upon them. No, thank you.

But as a film concept, The Lobster’s highly original plot builds upon the dystopian stories we’re used to. Taking place in the future, The City arrests single people and held in The Hotel wherein they must lockdown a mate within 45 days. If they don’t? They become animals in The Woods. However, David (Colin Farrell) escapes The Hotel and falls in love with a woman (Rachel Weisz) in The Woods.

The Lobster became one of the best reviewed films after its release in the United States in 2016. Sure, it’s humorous and romantic film, but with its biting commentary about a society fixated on pairing up, it has something to say about how we view love. Thankfully, our society isn’t nearly as cutthroat if we don’t swipe right on our perfect match.
