7. The One I Love

Release Year: 2014

Written By: Justin Lader

Directed By: Charlie McDowell

Starring: Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Mel Eslyn, Charlie McDowell

Perhaps one of the weirdest and most unconventional romantic comedies featured on this list, The One I Love turns the very concept of rom-coms on its head with a science fiction thriller element. What if while trying to repair your marriage you encountered doppelgängers?

Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) head to a weekend couples retreat in an attempt to save their marriage, but when they arrive, they discover that thy have each interacted with doppelgängers of the other at the grand estate. Over the course of the film, their carbon copies mix each other up and wreak havoc, futhering the chaos in their relationship.

The One I Love, from debut direction Charlie McDowell (son of Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen), twists the usual romantic comedy with a clever thematic spin on love and marriage. And the film will leave you guessing until the very end with its doppelgänger cliffhanger.
