15. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Release Year: 2011

Written By: Simon Beaufoy

Directed By: Lasse Hallström

Starring: Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas, Amr Waked

Ever since her Golden Globe-nominated breakthrough supporting role in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada, Emily Blunt has been charming audiences with her talent. She is the kind of actress who can star in a big budget franchise or tiny little indie flick and shine either way. Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was no exception.

Based on Paul Torday’s novel of the same name from 2007, the film takes place within the fishery industry. Harriet (Emily Blunt) contacts expert Alfred (Ewan McGregor) about opening salmon fishing in the Yemen. In the process of making the seemingly impossible possible, Harriet and Alfred fall in love.

From Lasse Hallström (director of multiple hit films such as My Life as a Dog and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) and Simon Beaufoy (screenwriter of Slumdog Millionaire and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen earned its leads Golden Globe nominations. The inspirational and romantic story is perfect for a Valentine’s Day viewing!
