25 Best Drama TV Shows on Amazon Prime: 24 moves up

Updated ranking of the 25 best drama TV shows on Amazon Prime right now, including Fox series 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland.

You couldn’t watch Fox for any length of time over the last few weeks and not see a commercial for the spin-off series 24: Legacy. The new show based on the old show had its season premiere after the Super Bowl on Sunday with the second airing on Monday night. I don’t know about you, but seeing all these promos and hearing the familiar clock tick away again made me want to revisit 24.

This is not an indictment on the new series and I hope it does well and hooks in a new audience of fans who will appreciate the storytelling but there’s nothing like the series that made Kiefer Sutherland a bigger TV star than he ever dreamed of when he was in movies.

The show wouldn’t have been as successful as it was if it weren’t for the job Sutherland did playing Jack Bauer. If I was assigning percentages for his role in the show being a massive hit, I’d say he was 75 percent responsible. And that may be a conservative estimate.

If you’re like me and have a craving to go back in time and see 24, you’re in luck, because all eight seasons are on Amazon Prime. Before we knew what binge-watching was, 24 fans were doing that when they watched the DVD’s or watched a number of episodes at a time off their TiVo or DVR. I remember watching the first season over the span of two days and being completely addicted to the ticking clock and the real-time feel the show provided. It was groundbreaking theater and something other shows have failed to duplicate.

It really made the viewer feel like everything was so much more dramatic and important that you couldn’t get through an episode without your heart pounding like you just finished a long workout on the treadmill. The government conspiracies, the life and death decisions Jack Bauer had to make and the inner workings of the White House all made for compelling storylines.
