15. Billy’s First Impression
Episode 1, “Of Mice and Men”
Goliath‘s first glimpse into the life of washed up lawyer Billy McBride found him stepping out of his motel room on a sunny morning in Southern California. Billy immediately swiped his neighbor’s newspaper after he snatched the leftover bacon of another resident’s breakfast. Next, Billy graciously fed the bacon to a homeless dog before he stepped into feces in the middle of the sidewalk.
After his neighbor yelled at him for stealing the newspaper, Billy enjoyed a bottle of whiskey and lectured his daughter about college despite forgetting her class year. Finally, he laughed at the bartender who said that she went to Northwestern. He sarcastically agreed with the woman that her education at such a prestigious school did not work out.
This introduction to Billy showed his struggles as a lawyer. Accompanied by a bottle of whiskey, Billy worked in a bar where he ironically joked about the bartender’s current situation. After all, he lived in a motel and could not even remember his daughter’s age. Thornton skillfully portrayed Billy’s humorous yet neglectful personality to communicate the lawyer’s struggles.
